Jon Olsen - Owner/Master Plumber
Born and bred in Taree, Jon moved to Sydney in 1997 to undertake a plumbing apprenticeship. After completing his apprenticeship, Jon moved with his girlfriend (now his wife Sam) to the UK, where he continued his plumbing career and took a bit of time off to travel around Europe. In 2002, Jon visited Gallipoli to commemorate Anzac Day, which he fondly remembers as one of the highlights of his trip.
On returning to Australia in 2003, Jon felt it was time to start out on his own and set up his own plumbing business. Two years later, the family moved to Newcastle to buy a house and start a family. He and his wife felt this was the opportune time to start their small family business J&S Olsen Plumbing. Business was good, and in 2007 Jon took on his first apprentice.
Outside of plumbing, Jon has many interests, particularly fitness. His many activities include rowing, running, swimming, and cycling. It was natural to combine all these interests into one and in 2019, Jon competed in his first triathlon.
Jon is also a music enthusiast; he enjoys going to watch live music and has a large record collection, one that Sam says takes up way too much room in the house!
When Jon isn’t helping customers with their plumbing needs, you may find him at one of the local coffee shops, enjoying an espresso flat white!
Fun Fact: Whilst in the first year of his apprenticeship, Jon played rugby league for the Balmain Tigers U20’s side and they went on to win the premiership!
Sam Olsen - Owner/Manager
Sam grew up in a village in Surrey, England and came to Australia in 1996 on a holiday working visa. Sam worked in the equestrian industry and gained sponsorship to stay in Australia through her employer. Whilst here she met Jon and the rest, as they say, is history.
In 2000, Sam travelled back to the UK with Jon for a working holiday. Whilst she enjoyed being back, she was more than happy to return to Australia with Jon in 2003 as a permanent resident.
Sam’s role in the business is administration support. When she’s not balancing the books, she’s answering the phone and coordinating rosters. She’s the friendly voice you’ll hear on the other end of the phone when you’re calling about a job. Sam also has a trusted office assistant in her 15-year-old kelpie, Bonnie.
Her interests include walking, yoga, rowing, going to the theatre and spending time with her family.
Sam also loves to cook. You will often find her visiting the farmers markets where she buys fresh produce to make a variety of interesting dishes for the family.
Mitch - Plumber
Mitch was born in Sydney, then moved to Macksville as a teenager. He returned to Sydney for a couple of years then moved to Newcastle in 1997 and says he’s been stuck here ever since!
Mitch has been plumbing since 1981 and enjoys the skills he’s developed over the past 40 years. He’s had his own business for a lot of that time but regularly works for J&S Olsen.
He finds Jon really good to work for, they get on well, and work well together.
He worked on golf courses for years, doing irrigation and didn’t ever imagine he’d be up for a game of golf, but took it up in 2008 and has had a love/hate relationship with it ever since! He’s managed 3 hole-in-ones and has successfully played for Merewether.
Mitch has also travelled a fair bit, including England, Spain, the US, and Canada. He did a 6-month self-drive tour around the US starting in San Diego and when his visa ran out, he headed up to Canada where he got a work visa and a job as a plumber on the ski fields up there. He’s still got the bug and enjoys getting away when he can.
Logan - Plumber
Logan grew up in Bathurst. In early 2021 he and his partner moved to Newcastle. While he confesses to having driven around Mt Panorama a few times, he promises he didn’t drive it too fast!
Logan started plumbing 5 years ago, initially installing plumbing in new residential houses but towards the end of his apprenticeship he switched to maintenance and hasn’t looked back. His favourite thing about plumbing is that he likes the variety. Every day there’s always something different, something interesting that requires him to use his brain and do a bit of problem solving.
He has a little staffy called Lucy, who is great but has developed a taste for his outdoor furniture!
In his spare time, he loves to ride his dirt bike. He grew up riding around his parent’s property and likes to get out as much as he can. He’s also started doing a bit of spearfishing “snorkelling with defence” as he puts it!
Eric - Plumber
Eric Thomas is a proud Novocastrian who has deep roots in the Lambton community. He feels grateful to have attended local schools and grown up in such a wonderful area.
Eric has been honing his plumbing skills for the past 5 years, starting with a pre-apprenticeship course while still in school.
His friendly and approachable nature makes him a favourite among customers, and he takes great pride in ensuring their satisfaction with the job.
Eric is a proud owner of a beautiful Rottweiler, who is a constant source of fun and companionship.
Working with the J&S team has been a pleasure for Eric, and he appreciates the camaraderie and support he receives from his colleagues. When he’s not on the job, Eric is a fervent rugby league fan who enjoys watching and attending games. He’s also a keen traveller, having explored Melbourne, Brisbane, and the Gold Coast. This year, he’s planning to broaden his horizons even further with a trip to Ireland, Italy, and France.
Liv - Apprentice Plumber
Liv is Newcastle born and bred, one of 4 girls. Her father is an electrician, which motivated her to consider a trade.
After working at Tradelink plumbing supplies for 4 years, Liv decided it was time, but rather than follow in her father’s footsteps and become an electrician, she decided to use her skills in plumbing supplies and begin a trade in plumbing. Her 3 sisters also work in male dominated professions.
Growing up Liv was a keen netballer. She also loves to travel and has been lucky enough to go backpacking all around Europe, visit Bali multiple times, and also catch up with friends and family all over Australia. Liv loves food, especially Mexican and would love to visit Mexico one day.
Liv is an avid dog-lover and has a staffy.
During the Covid pandemic, Liv has learned to roller skate and enjoys getting out in the fresh air and learning new tricks!
